The 5″ Returns to Haynes End

Report By Tony Bullock

On St. George’s Day 2017 a number of members gathered at the Winterfield end of our site to attend the opening of the 5″ gauge line which has been reinstated over the whole of the main line to and from Hammer Hill.

This is the first time for some years that 5″ locos have been able to access the Haynes End Station. As opening time approached, a long line of locos assembled to parade down the hill.

At 1pm our Chairman’s lady cut the ribbon, discarded the “No 5 inch beyond this point” sign and set the parade on its way. With blasts of whistles and horns our Chairman led the group away towards Haynes End.

In spite of a few minor slip ups the whole group arrived at Haynes End where they made use of the turntable to reassemble for the return run. With further blasts and hoots the group set off up the hill to return to Hammer Hill.

This facility owes its success to a lot of hard work by several people and we look forward to seeing it being used on a regular basis.
