Fowler Z7 at the Rempston Ploughing Competition 2006

The engine is a 3" scale model of the Fowler Z7 class compound ploughing engine.

Built from scaling original Fowler works drawings from Reading University, where considerable time was spent researching this class of engine. Every part was made by the builder, including the pattern making, the only work put out was the cutting of the teeth on the gears, as these were to large to fit on the mill. The Schaffer & Budenburg injector was built from scaling an original cross section drawing..

The cylinder block was fabricated so as to be able to build it with the correct angled valve faces i.e. compound 'V' angle. These would have been impossible to machine on a casting in this size as there is not much access through the top of the cylinder. The bores were fitted with cast iron liners after machining and then honed to final size. The Valve Gear is Stephensons as the original.

The two-stage oil pump was copied from a full size Manzell pump that was borrowed and striped down to take the details and measurements. It also has a working displacement lubricator.

The model has been steamed and ran very well; it had plenty of power, especially the winding drum.

It has taken almost 10 years to complete
